Harley Davidson Sportster XL 883 Low (2006)

July 2017 - June 2018

Lock 8 - Erie Canal - July 26, 2017

  How I got this bike:

My friend Carl, who knows my interest in buying bikes, called me to tell me about this bike owned by a woman friend of his. He'd seen the bike before and knew it would be a good deal.  He arranged for me to see it that day.  Little use (6,458 miles) and garage stored. The price was good so no negotiation needed.  Picked it up the next day, July 11, 2017.

Checking it out - July 10, 2017

  It came with some extras:

  • - windshield (and a lock for it)

  • - rear rack and tail trunk

  • - leather saddle bags in excellent condition

  • - electric jacket liner and gloves, chaps

  • - large size leather roll bag

  • - oil and a filter

I registered the bike one week later using the plate from the Honda Blackbird 1100 which I hadn't ridden yet this season.  The tires needed air and it was low on gas, both due to infrequent use I figured.  I had to remount the windshield.  The clamps were below the fork stops so they would have limited travel to about 2 inches.  I've taken off the trunk and given that away. Same with the chaps and gloves.

Suits Road - July 26, 2017

The front tire had significant age/ozone cracks so I put an Avon tire on it (July 26, 2017 - $170).

Hurst Road - Guilderland Center - July 26, 2017

Oil and filter changed at 6,628 miles, Aug. 2.  (2.8 liters, 20-50, K&N 170).  End of season, 7,027 miles, Nov. 7.

Ride With Friends - Sept. 2017

First ride of the season is on this bike, Feb. 20, 2018 - 62 F.  Late afternoon ride with just some wet roads.  I have the starting drill perfected; full choke, a few twists of the throttle and then crank the starter until it catches.  Bike is posted on Craigslist with 7,000 miles for $3,975.

Feb. 27, 2018

The bike gets ridden by Christine as a bike she can use while in Schenectady.  She does a few short rides and then some longer rides with our riding group.  She is cautious since she knows I am trying to sell it but gains confidence and seems to enjoy a solid, larger bike than what she had been riding.

Nearly sold several times in the spring of 2018. It takes until mid-June to sell this bike for $3,700.  Ridden 1,000 miles in 11 months.
